Fabulous Fabric Find, part II

Continuing on with our fabulous fabric find. Today, a table runner.

Because the linen was already sewn on 2 sides, it was the perfect width for a table runner. We simply sewed the end seams and added a leaf pattern (from Lotta Jansdotter) with fabric paint. The project was easy, and the results satisfying.

Fabulous Fabric Find

On a recent trip to Chicago, I (Carol) went to a certain large home store with a Swedish bent. While there, I scoured the “As-is” section and found this giant piece of linen. It was rolled up and taped with the price of $10.00. Of course I grabbed it and I am sure I looked strange practically jumping up and down at my find. Melany and I estimated at least 30 yards of beautiful, natural looking linen.  So, this week our goal is to make as much with the $10 fabric as we can.

Our first project is a window treatment for my (Carol”s ) dining room. My husband just re-finished our hard wood floors (thank you, darling). The linen made perfect sense as a curtain with its neutral color and clean lines. After a day of having the plain linen up, I added a bit of a blue with white flower fabric (also a fabulous find at $1.00 for about 2 yards). With just a hint of blue, the curtains, plus the wood floors, pull the room together.

Ice Cream Bucket to Ice Bucket

Gotta love the easy ones!

Ice cream bucket to ice bucket.

With the hot weather we at citymade are going through a lot of ice. Now that we use the ice cream bucket as an ice bucket, it can be filled with a few days worth of ice. No more constantly filling up trays.

Stroller to Changing Pad

Stroller to Changing Pad

What can you possibly do with a stroller that has broken wheels?  Repurpose it into a diaper changing pad of course.  We were able to salvage this water resistant fabric and quilt it onto some red wool to make a soft, portable changing pad.

Canister Labels

Canister Labels

These canister labels were made from an old dress.  We used a sharpie to write the contents of the canister onto the white canvas patch.  Velcro was a attached to each end of the canister wrap to secure them around the canisters.

No more guessing what’s inside!

Hit The Bricks

Have you heard the old saying, ” If life gives you lemons, make lemonade”? Well we at citymade say, “If life gives you an old pile of bricks, make a brick patio!”

Friend of citymade, Heidi, had a pile of bricks in the back of her garage. I (Carol) had been wanting to make a patio in my front yard (since I can’t get anything to grow there). There were approximately 300 bricks in the pile and, since Heidi lives close, we were able to make a few car trips in order to move them.

Then, Melany and I spent a day digging and leveling the yard and eventually laying the bricks. Now we have a nice, bricked front with out the worry of mowing what little grass there was or pulling the unsightly weeds.

Couch Cushion to Bench Seat

Here is the next project with the old couch cushion.

We turned this window seat into extra seating by adding cushions made from one of the old couch cushion.

We cut one of the cushions in half and sewed a cover over them. Then added a bolster pillow to create a pleasant seating area.

Couch Cushion to Garden Kneeler

We are now transitioning out of garden week (although this post is relevant for gardeners).  We took an old couch cushion from a broken couch and created two different posts from them.  Today’s post is a garden kneeler.  By removing the original cushion cover and recovering the cushion with some outdoor fabric we created an outdoor cushion to use in the garden.  No more sore knees while pulling weeds!

Garden Pics

Just for fun here are some pics of the growing things around our house. I love the anticipation that is growing vegetables.
